How to Throw a Boomerang ( Step by Step Beginners Guide )

Learning to throw a returning boomerang is easy once you understand a few basics. Follow these steps and you’ll soon see your boomerang fly out, circle around, and return toward you.

1. Check the Wind 🌬️

Boomerangs need a light wind to work properly.

  • Ideal wind: 5–15 km/h.

  • Stand facing directly into the wind before you throw.

If there is no wind at all, the boomerang may not return properly.

2. Know Your Throwing Hand ✋

Right-handed throwers:

  • Aim 10–30° to the RIGHT of the wind.

Left-handed throwers:

  • Aim 10–30° to the LEFT of the wind.

This angle allows the boomerang to curve around and return.

3. Hold the Boomerang Correctly

Grip the end of one wing firmly between your thumb and fingers.

Important points:

  • The curved side faces you.

  • The flat side faces outward.

  • Hold the boomerang almost vertical (about 10–20° tilt).

Do not throw it flat like a frisbee.

4. Take Your Throwing Stance 🧍

Stand side-on to your throwing direction.

  • Step forward with the opposite foot when throwing.

  • Keep your arm relaxed and ready to snap forward.

5. Throw with Spin, Not Power 💨

Boomerangs work because of spin.

  • Throw it similar to a baseball.

  • Use a quick wrist snap to create strong spin.

  • Keep the boomerang vertical during release.

More spin = better return.

6. Watch the Flight Path 👀

A properly thrown boomerang will:

  1. Fly forward away from you

  2. Start turning in a wide circle

  3. Rise slightly in the air

  4. Curve back toward where you are standing

7. Catch the Boomerang Safely 🤲

When it returns:

  • Keep your eyes on the boomerang.

  • Catch it with two hands like clapping.

  • If unsure, let it land safely.

Safety Tips ⚠️

  • Practice in a large open field or park.

  • Make sure no people, buildings, or roads are nearby.

  • Beginners should start with soft foam boomerangs, which are safer and easier to learn with.

Practice Makes Perfect

Your first few throws may not return perfectly. Small adjustments to wind direction, angle, and spin will quickly improve your results.

With a little practice, you’ll soon have your boomerang flying out and coming right back to you!
